The People
Nagomi Vineyards was started by ex-systems engineer and Tokyo native Toshihiro Ike. In 2010, he planted his first vines in Tomi City and in 2018, obtained his brewing licence and established the winery. Ike-san’s winemaking can be described as taking reference from Burgundy, and he’s one of the few winemakers in Japan that specifically age still wines in bottle for an extended duration, releasing them only when he feels it’s ready.
The Land
Ike-san's vineyards are located on clay soils in Kano, Tomi.
The relatively steep slopes here give way to a stunning view of the Yatsugatake Mountains in the distance. This also helps with drainage, although Tomi experiences lower rainfall than most parts of Japan.
The Wine
While Nagomi Vineyards’ top cuvees consist of a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay, Ike-san also makes sparkling wines using representative regional grapes like Kyoho, Nagano Purple, and Shine Muscat.
Ike-san's wines are well made and reflect his unwavering dedication to quality. Some of his wines were presented at the Salon des Vins Japonais event in Beaune, and received great acclaim from the French audience there.
